YACHT – “I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler” (Singles Going Steady)

It's tempting to call this the next Apple commercial tune.

Dustin Ragucos: It’s tempting to call this the next Apple commercial tune. It has a catchy beat, head-bobbing bass notes, and a disco feel that feels vintage but still cool. Yet it’s a track that pushes against the electronic pilgrim. The future’s cool, but it’s not that cool. The world still has its bothers. This song isn’t one of them. [7/10]

Kevin Korber: I think we can all agree now that techno-paranoia cannot be written about in song without sounding excessively preachy and dumb. It sounds even worse over YACHT’s synth-driven dance-pop, which only conjures memories about how innovative Gary Numan was supposed to be. [3/10]

John Garrett: I too thought the future would be cooler. I also hoped pop music would be more interesting than this. The Pet Shop Boys came up with more nuanced stuff in their sleep… in 1987. Yes, if this is the future, I think we can all agree that the past was pretty rad. [3/10]
